The Dashboard
In the latest news post, theljstaff have encouraged us to post some feedback here about the dashboard...

... and it seems that we can't post here unless we join the community. So I've done so.

The first thing I noticed (and it's first impressions that drive people away from a new feature and ensure they never come back) is that while the content is only about a thousand pixels wide, something is ensuring that the sideways scroll bar is giving us about another thousand pixels of completely empty page width. It's merely an irritation on a regular desktop browser but it's rather disabling on a handheld (such as a 640-pixel-wide pocket PC, one of my main browsers).

Internet Explorer 7 on Windows Vista exhibits this behaviour.
Opera 8.65 for Windows Mobile exhibits this behavior.

The version of Pocket IE that comes with Windows Mobile 5.0 doesn't.
Firefox 2.0.0.xx on Windows Vista doesn't.
Firefox 2.0.0.xx on Ubuntu 7.10 doesn't.

Any thoughts?

I'm not going to bother making my own post, but while this bug doesn't show up on my computer (windows XP, using Firefox, I feel like I got redirected to youtube or myspace or something!

Not keen. Won't use it. I don't even use the front page of LJ, so...

The but doesn't seem to show up for Firefox on Windows XP either.

In any event, no offense to the people who worked hard on it, but this just isn't a very useful feature for me personally. I don't use LJ to see updates on the news or American Idol, but to find new content on a narrow range of topics that don't have mass popularity. What would be useful is tools allowing us to siphon through LJ in order to find this kind of content.

For example, on Russian LJ, there is a search feature that allows you to search posts. So if we had that on English LJ, that would be very helpful.

I agree. There's the issue of it not being of much use to many LJers, and also the page is too cluttered. There is so much information on the screen that my eyes don't know where to go first, and that makes me simply want to click away.

Nope, haven't got a lick of graphic design knowledge in my noggin!

We hear that loud and clear. Adding search to LJ is our next big project. Please hang tight.

Glad to hear it!

It looks interesting, and I'm sure it'll be useful for the people who are after that type of content. *shrug*

I liked the idea a lot, but unfortunately none of the "most popular" stuff ever appeals to me at all, so it would be cool if the thing were more configurable. Maybe based on the user's most used tags or something.

As far as the way it works/displays, they thing looks great in safari.

We are able to reproduce this on IE7, though not with the latest desktop version of Opera. We're looking into it.

Apart from the LJ Dashboard looking like a portal page, I just don't see it as relevant to my own journal directly. A lot of the stuff appearing in Dashboard are of no interest to me, content-wise. It's just like watching people and cars go past on a busy city street.

My first impression is that I AM logged in to LJ but LJDashboard says that I am not logged in and wants me to log in using an OpenID - weird and confusing.

I hate pages where things scroll and I can't make them stop. They give me a headache. So I hit the backbutton before even exploring much.

Couldn't log in at all (using XP & IE), but scoping out the unlogged-in version, I agree with some of the previous commenters - scrolling is a little maddening and there needs to be an ability to focus on specific topics or types of journals. I'm not much for typical content, either.

My first impression of the LJ Dashboard -- wow, nothing but porn spam as far as the eye can see. Probably not the look LJ was going for.

I can't seem to get it to show up for me. Says there's an issue.

Can't get it...
Dashboard URL is timing out, unfortunately. Would love to take a look. The Aquarium is extremely cool, though.

I think it's been long-since killed.
